Even now, Ally McCoist, the Rangers icon, is one of the most beloved characters in Ibrox history.
Super Ally, the club’s all-time top goalscorer, is a blue-blood and one of the most significant historical personalities in the history of the Gers, having led McCoist Rangers as their striker throughout the 9IAR era.
However, Rangers supporters have grown accustomed to sharing Ally McCoist with the general British audience in recent years; the iconic Gers hero is currently one of the most beloved broadcasters in the country.
As the former Rangers manager receives an OBE for his contributions to the beautiful game and its broadcast, his bond with the British public is now acknowledged.
Ally McCoist, a Rangers legend, received an OBE
On October 2, 2024, in the morning, Alistair Murdoch McCoist was appointed an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) at Windsor Castle.
The legendary player for the Rangers and Scotland was photographed at Windsor Castle accepting the esteemed award from His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.
Ally McCoist, a Rangers great, will undoubtedly be beaming with pleasure at this moment as he considers a lifetime devoted to sports broadcasting and the Ibrox club.
The former manager, assistant, and number nine for the Rangers is still regarded as one of the team’s greatest supporters and a prominent co-commentator on coverage of some of the biggest football games.
McCoist has always had a fondness for sports broadcasting, dating back to his time on the BBC’s A Question of Sport. We’re sure you’ll share our excitement for Super Ally this morning.
During this week’s TNT Sports Champions League coverage, when Ally McCoist was seen grinning with Laura Woods, Rio Ferdinand, and Joleon Lescott, the Rangers great was questioned about receiving the OBE.
“I’m going to Windsor Castle tomorrow to pick up my OBE, which I have been awarded for whatever reason.”
A Rangers icon who is closely related to Ibrox
Few names are more closely associated with the Rangers than Ally McCoist, the club legend.
While playing for Rangers, McCoist made 581 appearances and scored 355 goals, earning an incredible 20 major awards.
It’s a record that’s unlikely to be surpassed.
The iconic former Ibrox manager had a significant influence on McCoist as a player, coach, and person. In 2008, the Rangers legend rejoined the team as an assistant to the late, great Walter Smith.
Following three consecutive championships, McCoist took over as manager of Rangers in 2011. He was tasked with the difficult job of leading the team through its financial collapse, a contribution that some fans seem to undervalue.
Whilst pandemonium enveloped the Ibrox boardroom, McCoist held the club together and it’s no exaggeration to argue that without Super Ally’s leadership on the ground in this moment Rangers might well have ceased to exist.
After stepping down as manager in 2015, McCoist has subsequently established himself as a popular broadcaster and is a beloved member of the Rangers community.
