Clayton McMillan named All Blacks XV head coach for Europe tour

The 2024 All Blacks XV coach has been announced: Clayton McMillan, head coach of the Chiefs, will lead the squad on its early November European tour.

McMillan, who assisted Leon MacDonald in the All Blacks XV environment in 2022 and 2023, takes over as the Chiefs’ leader after leading them to consecutive Super Rugby Pacific final appearances.

Alongside him will be Hurricanes coaches Jamie Mackintosh (head coach) and Cory Jane (defensive coach), as well as David Hill (attack coach), who also works for the Chiefs.

The squad will be exposed to various levels and styles of rugby up north, and it will be extremely beneficial to be able to work with different coaches and players. “Having three highly regarded assistants in David, Jamie, and Cory is a great asset,” McMillan remarked.

While David has spent numerous seasons with the All Blacks, having his knowledge and comprehension of that atmosphere is crucial. Cory and Jamie had a fantastic season with the Hurricanes in Super Rugby Pacific.

“I spent last week with the All Blacks to see how they operate and had some good discussions around selections for the All Blacks XV, with the squad announcement coming next week. Preparations are well underway for the tour north.”

On November 2 at Thomond Park in Limerick, the All Blacks XV will take on Munster. On November 10 (local time), they will travel to Montpellier to play Georgia.

The fact that Munster is sold out means that we will play in front of fervent supporters. Georgia is a competitive squad; they defeated Japan (25–23) and came close to defeating Australia (40–29) in July, so we anticipate a fierce matchup.

Following trips to the UK and Japan in their first two campaigns, the All Blacks XV will go on their third tour in 2024. Mike Anthony, Head of High Performance at New Zealand Rugby, emphasised the significance of the team.

“These are opportunities for our next generation of talent to learn from different coaches and gain experience with international touring,” Anthony stated.

“Clayton has been a part of the program since its beginning, and he and the other coaches offer a wealth of knowledge from various Super Rugby settings. Working together with them and the All Blacks XV management group will be exciting as we continue to develop a depth of potential.

“As we begin a new RWC cycle, alignment with the All Blacks is also a critical piece.”

Next Monday, the 36-man All Blacks squad for the Nothern Tour will be announced along with the All Blacks XV team.
