The £11 million player abandoned the Bundesliga last summer to take on the Scottish Premiership.
Despite the beating he took from Borussia Dortmund, Arne Engels, ever the defender, swatted away enquiries about his move to Celtic, stating that the move from FC Augsburg “is everything he hoped for”.
After leaving the Bundesliga for a record-breaking £11 million, the Belgian quickly established himself at Celtic Park by taking Matt O’Riley’s place. Expectations were high among the Celtic fanbase heading into the second matchday of Europe’s premier competition, as the Hoops had dominated Slovan Bratislava in their Champions League opener and were enjoying a perfect start to the season domestically.
However, following the crushing 7-1 loss, several in the German media have questioned the 21-year-old’s decision to abandon the Bundesliga the previous campaign. But Engels vowed that the entire team would come together to make history in the Premiership this weekend, telling Kicker that the crushing defeat was just another hard day at work for Brendan Rodgers’ team.
“We just didn’t play well,” he stated. Even though Dortmund was extremely powerful, I still believe that 7-1 was a bit much. Now is the time to stick together.
We focus on improving ourselves and only consider the next game. We have to move on since everything is happening so quickly that there isn’t time to ponder over it.
We didn’t play our best game; I believe that was evident to all. The good news is that we have a short wait until our next game, and we have the opportunity to prove to Dortmund that we are still in the right frame of mind despite their poor performance.
Furthermore, he stated emphatically that he was still having fun at Celtic. Engels continued, “Yeah, except from this particular game. It fulfils every wish I had, sometimes exceeding them. Although we had a difficult day today, we normally have much better days.”
