Following Tuesday night’s crushing 7-1 loss to Borussia Dortmund, Celtic’s social media crew appeared to take a little vacation, as the team’s Twitter account went silent for more than a day following the customary post-match updates.
When the account eventually awakened, it wasn’t quite what everyone expected. Rather than releasing a rallying cry or a message of support, Celtic’s first tweet following the crushing was… an advertisement for brand-new throwback Adidas clothing. A little foolish, huh? It was just a little bit too late.
Even though the retro uniform was quite nice, it was obvious that supporters were still hurting over the Dortmund outcome. At least they mitigated the damage by using Mikael Lustig as the prototype for the new material!
Some hoped for some introspection, or even just an admission of the painful experience they had in Germany. Instead, the new merchandise drop gave them a taste of the 1990s.
To be fair, it’s probably not the social media team’s responsibility to repair the team’s troubles on the pitch, but it’s safe to say the timing of this sales pitch had a few supporters scratching their heads.
A little retail therapy is fine, but perhaps wait till everything has settled the next time, Celtic?
Celtic Offer Assistance to Dortmund
Regarding Tuesday’s game, it was an unforgettable evening. Dortmund really didn’t need any encouragement to stab away after Celtic gave them goal after goal. As Celtic manager in Europe, Brendan Rodgers suffered yet another crushing loss.
This weekend against Ross County, the team needs to get over their defeat and resume winning. Undoubtedly, our team is strong, but we feel so disconnected from the elite players in Europe!
