Despite a humiliating week for the champions, Celtic majority shareholder Dermot Desmond thinks the squad is performing well in the Champions League.
The Celtic leader spoke to the team and supporters in a rare interview.
The Hoops won their first match in the redesigned league phase of the competition 5-1 against Slovan Bratislava. Confidence was high amidst a perfect domestic record, but a 7-1 thumping of Borussia Dortmund has raised questions about their ability to compete at Europe’s top table.
Although it wasn’t pretty, Celtic made their Premiership comeback on Sunday, defeating Ross County 2-1 on the road after falling down. Goals from Nicolas Kuhn and Alistair Johnston completed the victory.
While participating in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship this past weekend, majority stakeholder Desmond stressed the significance of a reaction during a rare speech on manager Brendan Rodgers and the club in Champions League waters.
He declared to Sportsound, “I’m thrilled. We did an excellent job playing football, I believe. We could have played poorly after a strong start, but instead we played excellent and thrilling football.
“We didn’t play our best on Tuesday, which is unfortunate, but I think we have a good squad and I like what Brendan and we are doing.” I want to see some excellent outcomes, home results, and perhaps even a point or two gained by Nick.
“So far, I believe we have performed incredibly well. Playing eight different teams—four at home and four away—with a wide range of rankings is an interesting experience. It, in my opinion, makes things exciting for the team, the fans, and the public at large.”
