James Tavernier to return to Ibrox ‘stronger’ after Philippe Clement decision at Rangers

Barry Ferguson believes James Tavernier might return to Rangers “stronger and better” following a recent Philippe Clement decision.

Dujon Sterling is favoured to start at right-back, therefore the Gers captain was left out of the starting lineup for Thursday’s (7 November) Europa League match with Olympiacos.

Ferguson, a Daily Record pundit, thinks Clement’s decision to fire the Englishman could be what the right-back needs to restart his career, despite others speculating that it marks the end of his tenure at Ibrox.

He stated in an article for the Daily Record on Saturday, November 9, that “everyone knows that as you get older, your body is not the same.”It’s possible that Tav is experiencing some discomfort right now.

“I don’t know, but perhaps if you give him a little break and let him watch his teammates from the bench, you might see Tav return stronger and better.” How is James Tavernier, the Rangers captain, doing at Ibrox?

It seems like Clement made the proper decision to remove Tavernier from the firing line before the international break, regardless of what happens to the captain between now and the rest of the season.

The Englishman will be feeling it himself if all the commentators and fans can acknowledge that he hasn’t been at his best thus far this season.

Seeing players like Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo excel in his position during a stint out of the starting lineup can be enough to give him the drive and motivation he needs to return to the field and perform at his peak.

On Sunday, November 10, Sterling should be well enough to start again against Hearts. Tavernier will only be used if he is unable to play the whole ninety minutes.

Clement and his coaching staff can then reevaluate the issue and reach a longer-term decision regarding the captain’s future following the international break.
