If Rangers can exploit a transfer window at the end of Kwame Poku’s contract with Peterborough United, they will be able to avoid spending more than £6 million for the winger.
Visiting Ibrox scouts witnessed Poku score an incredible hat-trick in Peterborough’s 6-1 thumping of rival Cambridge United, according to an exclusive report by Rangers News.
Since then, connections to the English Championship and Premier League have surfaced, with Burnley, Millwall, Southampton, and Ipswich Town all cited as potential suitors.
Rangers, however, intend to exploit cross-border compensation regulations, which would allow Poku to relocate to Scotland at a reduced cost.
Outspoken chairman Darragh MacAnthony is gradually facing the prospect of losing Kwame Poku when his current contract expires in the summer, while Peterborough has also extended an offer to the winger.
However, the Irishman believes they should expect to pay more than £6 million if someone from south of the border swoops in.
Posh anticipate Kwame Poku will receive “millions and millions.”
Kwame Poku, a left-footed right-winger, has already returned to Peterborough this season with ten goals and seven assists, drawing attention.
Rangers will attempt to negotiate a low-cost cross-border deal for Poku, in which the Gers would be required to pay a small development fee.
However, if teams from across the border decide to pursue the 23-year-old, they will have to work out a development fee with Peterborough, who have a history of being obstinate.
Darragh MacAnthony, who has participated in several public debates concerning Peterborough’s seemingly never-ending supply of youthful talent, has now been discussing the matter.
A brazen MacAnthony believes Peterborough will receive “millions and millions” for Poku at tribunal if the winger stays south of the border, ignoring the potential of a team outside of England to pout.
In his most recent Hard Truth podcast, MacAnthony stated, “Tribunals will look at a lot of things.”
They’ll check the length of time he’s been with you. After four years with us, he will have likely played 200 games and we will have already spent close to £500,000 on add-ons.
They’ll examine the bids we’ve received. We will therefore be able to enter the tribunal right immediately and present them with bids from six months prior that were worth three and three, with £3 million up front and £3 million in add-ons (a total of £6 million).
“We’ll anticipate at least that plus, plus, plus, and plus.”
The team attempting to recruit him will look at it and say, “That’s a big club with money, you’re going to have to pay whatever.” A fair tribunal will look and say, “Yeah, you’ve spent £500k, you’ve developed him.”
They would therefore value that in that way.
It also has to do with the fact that we have extended a substantial offer to him. We would anticipate that the tribunal would be extremely fair in order to force teams to pay a reasonable price and not deter them from remaining in that predicament when wealthier clubs start to enter the market.
Kwame Poku has Premier League potential at over £30 million.
According to Darragh MacAnthony, Kwame Poku is a player who might fetch over £30 million and is headed for the Premier League.
Poku’s intention to leave Peterborough has been alluded to by MacAnthony, who believes it’s time for the attacker to advance to a “higher level.”
In spite of the fact that Peterborough turned down those £6 million offers for the winger in the summer, the Posh offered Poku a “club record” contract.
When it comes to Poku’s potential, MacAnthony believes the Rangers-affiliated forward is on par with any player who has performed well at Peterborough in recent years.
These include players like Ivan Toney of Brentford, Ronnie Edwards of Southampton, and Sammie Szmodics, a winger for Ipswich Town.
According to MacAnthony, “a fair price for someone like Kwame is in the millions and millions and millions.”
He’s going to be one of those players who, if I were to guess, will likely get £30 million or more in three years.
He’ll be among those who play in the Premier League and Championship before exploding once more.
Because he is physically strong, has excellent speed, top-notch skill, a voracious appetite, and is constantly present.
“In the Premier League, he will be fantastic.
“Kwame is most likely among the greatest players to emerge from Peterborough in recent years.”
Rangers will be hoping that the winger will be drawn to Scotland by the promise of a championship match, European football, and the anticipation of Ibrox.
