Todd Carney, a former member of the Hull KR, Salford Red Devils, and Catalans Dragons, has landed a coaching position in the NRL. Carney, 38, is currently leading a sober life and has been hired by the Gold Coast Titans as a junior pathways coach.
Once regarded as one of the NRL’s best players, Carney earned the Dally M Medal in 2010 following an incredible season with the Sydney Roosters. But the former half-back’s career was ruined by off-field problems, and he struggled to be consistent.
Before joining the Catalans Dragons in the Super League in 2015, he had controversial stints with the Roosters, Canberra Raiders, and Cronulla Sharks. Before joining Salford for a season, he made 33 appearances for the French team.
After returning to Australia in 2018, the former New South Wales and Australia international played with the Northern Pride, North Queensland Cowboys, and North Sydney Bears before joining Hull KR in July of the same year to play the rest of the season. He played for the Robins six times.
However, Carney has made progress in his life and is now almost two years sober since ending his playing career. The Titans have given him the go-ahead after he quit drinking and started coaching at Keebra Park High School.
The Daily Telegraph Down Under quoted Carney as saying, “It’s been a new journey, not so much a challenge.” I’m excited because I feel like I can contribute in a variety of ways. I want to support the upcoming generation of children because it has been a long journey for me.
“Looking back, I realise how much I missed. They will greatly profit if my one or two words will improve their lives or football.
“So much has changed,” he continued. Working with the Titans is a huge opportunity. This is yet another positive step.
“I didn’t believe I would be employed by an NRL organisation two years ago. A month ago, I gave a speech at the NRL rookie camp, and I may do it at all 17 clubs.
“Getting things done along the road has been rewarding and a huge difference. Without the adjustments, they would not have been possible.
“The Titans are producing some excellent young players. Teaching them the fundamentals is the goal. Although they possess the abilities, they must be ready to advance.
“It’s sufficient to play the game the way I am now. I have to spend time with my family at home.
