A returning player from injury should not detract from Sunderland’s clear need for a key signing in January.
The Black Cats currently face a number of injury absences, including Romaine Mundle and Tommy Watson, leaving a significant gap in talent on the left flank. With the upcoming match against Norwich City, it’s expected that either Eliezer Mayenda or Wilson Isidor will step in to cover the position.
While neither Mundle nor Watson is set to return soon, Sunderland boss Regis Le Bris has highlighted one summer signing, Ian Poveda, who is nearing a comeback.
Ian Poveda’s Return Must Not Overshadow Sunderland’s Need for a Winger
Le Bris has confirmed that Poveda is on the verge of rejoining the squad after a prolonged injury absence. The Colombian international was seen in midweek training ahead of the Norwich clash and could feature as a substitute.
In his pre-match press conference, Le Bris stated:
“Ian has trained for just over a week now, so he’s in really good shape. He’s not ready to play a full game, but he can be a substitute.”
Despite Poveda’s return, Sunderland still face a glaring issue on the wings, one that his comeback alone cannot resolve.
Injury Concerns Mean Poveda Can’t Provide Reliable Depth
There’s no denying Ian Poveda’s talent, which Sunderland fans are eager to see in action. Previous stints at Sheffield Wednesday and Leeds United showcased his abilities, with even Manchester City’s Pep Guardiola once describing the winger as “incredible.”
However, Poveda’s injury history is a recurring concern. His time at Sunderland has been no exception, proving he cannot be relied upon as a consistent option for Le Bris.
To address the lack of depth in wide areas, Sunderland will need to bring in additional wingers during the transfer window, as Poveda’s return alone won’t solve this pressing issue.
