Exclusive: Sunderland halted at seven-figure asking price for key target, Cats have different plan in mind

Tom Cannon is making transfer news once more. It appears that Cannon has been a target for the Championship for the past three transfer windows, and Sunderland has been among those interested.

It must be getting old for Sunderland supporters to hear Tom Cannon’s name brought up in conjunction with a transfer to the Stadium of Light. Or perhaps not, since the striker is once again in excellent form and is predicted to join a big Championship team in January.

With the loan signing of Enzo Le Fee from Roma, the Black Cats have already strengthened their fight for promotion. Although Leicester City is open to a permanent sale, Sunderland would have to pay £7 million to sign Cannon in January.

According to the most recent information released by Alan Nixon, Sheffield United may surpass Sunderland in the competition to recruit the 22-year-old, as the Blades are currently willing to offer £7 million. Irishman Cannon has scored nine goals in 22 Championship games for the Potters so far this season.

He even scored during Stoke City’s 2-1 FA Cup victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last time around.

Tom Cannon is Sunderland’s latest addition, according to Graeme Bailey.

It should come as no surprise that Sunderland has downplayed the likelihood of spending £7 million on Cannon following a deal to sign Le Fee on loan. Transfer analyst Graeme Bailey informs us that the rumoured £7 million price tag for Cannon is accurate in an interview with Sunderland AFC News.

Bailey claims that Leicester City, who paid £7.5 million for Cannon in the summer of 2023, is looking for him for anything between £6.5 and £7 million. Bailey claims that although Sunderland is in need of a new striker, they just cannot afford to spend that much at this time.

Bailey concludes by saying that Sunderland will probably look to the loan market for a new striker during the remaining January transfer window.

Changes in Sunderland’s striker division

The Black Cats’ desire for a new striker is not surprising, particularly in light of the news that Millwall wants to sign Aaron Connolly and that the deal may already be well advanced.

Then, before the deadline, it was disclosed that Trey Ogunsuyi may go on loan. Wilson Isidor would be the sole active striker for the team if he and Connolly left.

However, it doesn’t appear that Cannon will be leaving Stoke to move to Sunderland at this time. It appears more likely that Sheffield United will move to Bramall Lane, and if the Blades contribute £7 million, the relocation may be completed quickly.
