In order to prolong his time at Ibrox, Ianis Hagi is open to meeting with Rangers to discuss a new contract.
The Romanian’s contract expires at the conclusion of current season, 12 months earlier than previously believed, according to a statement made by Gers coach Philippe Clement last week. After being locked out at the beginning of the season due to a salary dispute, the Light Blues manager is eager to keep a player who has put in countless hours to re-establish himself as a crucial man at Ibrox.
However, he has also implied that Hagi might have to take a pay reduction if he wishes to prolong his five-year term. Negotiations over new terms have not yet taken place. However, Hagi is open to any suggestions Gers may have. “Ianis is happy in Glasgow,” a source close to the 26-year-old told Record Sport. Nothing new has been spoken regarding his contract as of yet, but he will undoubtedly hear what the Rangers have to say. However, no negotiations are currently scheduled.
Due to a wage rise clause that would have increased his pay if he had played even one more game for Clement’s starting lineup, Hagi was exiled to the Gers B team in the summer. Hagi was permitted to return to his first-team teammates after Rangers and the player’s representation were able to reach an agreement.
Clement would prefer him to continue in Glasgow because his contract expires in the summer, but he acknowledges that it might not be feasible given the midfielder’s expectations. “Ianis’ contract is coming to an end this season, so there will be negotiations around that to see if it’s possible or not (for him to stay),” he said in an interview last week.
“Neither the club nor the numbers Ianis has in mind are known to me. Thus, they will have conversations. Naturally, I’m pleased with Ianis’s performance. Although I was previously aware of him, I had little control over a preseason circumstance.
“I’m glad that following talks with the club, everyone was prepared to put water to the wine, get together, and figure out a solution to it. The team has obviously benefited greatly from it.
Hagi has already dismissed rumours that he could visit Turkey this month, where his father, Gheorge, used to be a major player in Europe and played for Galatasaray. Strasbourg, a French team, has reportedly expressed interest recently as well. After scoring in last month’s Old Firm victory over Celtic, he was asked about his future and responded, “Do I look happy? Indeed.
“You can’t really control everything, but I’m happy.” As I’ve stated previously, I’ve realised at this age what I must do and the setting in which I must do it.
“Compared to previous season, you can certainly tell how delighted I am here on the pitch. It’s about that for me. You can’t control everything in football, but I’m pleased here, that much is certain.
