Rangers Make Late Attempt to Swoop for Yorbe Vertessen Amid Salzburg Move

Rangers have made a last-minute push to sign Yorbe Vertessen from Union Berlin, according to Pieter-Jan Calcoen.

Het Nieuwsblad reported on Monday morning (3 February) that the Belgian forward is on the verge of completing a permanent move to Red Bull Salzburg, despite interest from several clubs. However, Calcoen, writing for the Flemish daily, revealed via his personal X account that Rangers have made a late effort to hijack the deal.

Despite their attempts, the journalist noted that Philippe Clement’s side are unlikely to succeed unless they launch a “huge charm offensive” to sway the player’s decision.

Rangers’ Surprise Move for Vertessen

With the winter transfer window hours from closing, few expected Rangers to be in the market for another striker. However, as Ibrox News reported in December, sporting director Nils Koppen has been monitoring talent in Belgium, making Vertessen—a 12-time Belgium Under-21 international—a logical target.

The 24-year-old has struggled for regular game time at Union Berlin this season, accumulating just 714 minutes in the Bundesliga. While Werder Bremen were previously linked with a move, Red Bull Salzburg now appear to be the frontrunners for his signature.

Rangers’ interest in Vertessen may be linked to ongoing uncertainty surrounding Cyriel Dessers’ future. The Nigerian international has been the subject of transfer speculation, with clubs in Italy reportedly keen to secure his services before the deadline (La Gazzetta dello Sport, 3 February).

As the transfer window ticks down, it remains to be seen whether Rangers can pull off an unexpected deal or if Vertessen will officially make the switch to Salzburg.
