Leeds United Dismiss Matt Targett Transfer Rumors
Graham Smyth has dismissed any speculation linking Newcastle United’s Matt Targett with a late move to Leeds United, stating that club officials are perplexed by the rumors.
According to Newcastle World, Leeds reportedly approached the Magpies regarding a deal for the full-back, though this connection has been strongly disputed in recent days. With Daniel Farke already having Junior Firpo and Sam Byram at his disposal, along with Isaac Schmidt waiting for his chance, many have questioned the need for another left-back.
Speaking on The Square Ball podcast (3 February), Smyth remarked:
“It’s a really strange one. Newcastle isn’t indicating any such move, and Leeds are adamant—actually baffled—that it’s being reported as if it’s real or even close to happening. What makes it even odder is that left-back is probably the last position Leeds need to strengthen.”
Is Matt Targett a Necessary Addition for Leeds?
The simple answer? No.
While Premier League experience can be valuable in Leeds’ push for promotion back to the top flight, Daniel Farke has already built a formidable side. Their recent 7-0 demolition of Cardiff City showcased their strength, and the team looks well-positioned to maintain momentum.
Though Firpo has dealt with injuries this season, his recent performances—highlighted by three assists against Cardiff—suggest he’s back to his best. Combined with the squad’s depth and quality, Leeds appear well-equipped to challenge for the Championship title.
At the start of the season, when uncertainty surrounded the squad due to potential player exits after missing out on promotion, a move like this might have made sense. However, unless Leeds can secure a game-changing signing—like a prolific 20-goal-a-season striker—there’s little urgency to make additions before the transfer window closes.
