Keith Jackson: Rangers Would Be Making a Smart Move with Vaclav Cerny Deal
Rangers would secure a fantastic deal if they manage to sign Vaclav Cerny on a permanent basis, according to Daily Record journalist Keith Jackson.
Jackson believes that securing the Czech international for a fee in the region of £6–£7 million would be excellent value for the Ibrox side. Cerny is currently on loan from Wolfsburg, with the Bundesliga club reportedly holding out for around £8 million for the forward (Kicker, 22 January).
Speaking on Hotline Live (2 February), Jackson remarked, “A fee between £6–£7 million for Cerny would represent outstanding business with great value.”
Rangers Ready to Invest in Cerny?
Rangers have previously splashed the cash on players like Rabbi Matondo and Oscar Cortes, who have struggled to make a significant impact. While Cerny appears to offer better value based on his current performances, it’s uncertain whether Nils Koppen and the recruitment team will prioritize a permanent deal.
The club has recently shifted focus towards signing younger talents, and at 27, Cerny doesn’t perfectly align with that strategy. However, his contributions this season under Philippe Clement—13 goals and seven assists—highlight his importance in the final third.
Although Rangers aim to adopt a more sustainable, profit-driven model, Cerny’s short-term impact could be vital for their competitiveness. Despite the hefty £7 million price tag, the Czech forward has shown he’s worth the investment.
If Rangers choose not to sign him permanently, they may be forced to gamble on an unproven talent to strengthen their attacking options.
