Former Hearts Manager Unexpectedly Touted for Rangers Job

A surprising case has been made for a former Hearts boss to take charge at Rangers.

Following Barry Ferguson’s appointment as Rangers’ interim manager after Philippe Clement’s dismissal, discussions surrounding the club’s decision dominated BBC Scotland’s Sportsound program on Wednesday. Meanwhile, Hearts secured a 3-1 victory over St Mirren in the Premiership, but an unexpected debate arose regarding who could have stepped in at Ibrox.

During the discussion, Hearts legend John Robertson put forward ex-Jambos manager Craig Levein as a potential short-term solution for Rangers, suggesting he could have helped turn things around in the dressing room.

Pundits Debate Levein’s Potential at Ibrox

Former footballer Rory Loy questioned whether an experienced manager would have taken a three-month contract in the current circumstances, to which Robertson responded:

“Craig Levein would have. If you told him, ‘Come in, sort the dressing room out, give them a kick up the backside, and get the best out of them,’ he would have done it. He would have sorted out a few of those players in there.”

However, Leanne Crichton was skeptical, arguing that keeping Clement would have been a better choice and doubting whether Levein’s appointment would have inspired excitement among fans.

Robertson acknowledged her point but reiterated that Levein, a former Scotland manager with European experience—including a win in Braga—could have been considered if Rangers had wanted a more seasoned figure for the remainder of the campaign.

BBC host Kenny MacIntyre described the suggestion as “leftfield,” while Robertson clarified that he wasn’t criticizing the club’s decision to appoint Ferguson and his coaching team. Instead, he emphasized that their presence was largely to stabilize the situation and reconnect with the fans.

With Ferguson leading Rangers until the end of the season, the long-term managerial decision remains open—unless, as Robertson joked, they go on to win the Europa League.
