Steven Gerrard Tipped for Rangers Return If Club Seeks Permanent Manager

Steven Gerrard has been backed to return to Ibrox for a second managerial stint should Rangers decide to appoint a new permanent boss.

Barry Ferguson has taken charge as interim manager following Philippe Clement’s sacking last week, and he got off to a strong start with a 4-2 comeback victory against Hibernian at Rugby Park. While Ferguson may quietly hope to secure the role beyond this season, Rangers are expected to explore other options ahead of the 2025-26 campaign, with several names already being linked.

Derek Ferguson Endorses Gerrard’s Return

Gerrard, who led Rangers to their 55th league title in the 2020-21 season, is currently the bookmakers’ favorite to take over on a full-time basis. The 44-year-old recently departed Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq and holds a managerial win rate of 55.1%, having also managed Aston Villa.

Speaking to Ibrox News before his brother Barry was appointed, Derek Ferguson expressed his support for a potential Gerrard return:

“It was a surprise to see Steven leave his position in Saudi. I think it’s something Rangers fans would welcome. He delivered the club’s 55th title, and while some may argue it took him three years, he got there in the end. He’s still highly regarded, and most supporters adore him. If Rangers made that appointment, I’d be all for it.”

Who Else Is in the Running for the Rangers Job?

Beyond Gerrard, Issame Charai—formerly part of Clement’s coaching team—has been mentioned as a candidate, along with current interim boss Barry Ferguson, who could strengthen his claim if he impresses in the role.

Other names linked to the position include former Premier League managers Sean Dyche and Russell Martin, both of whom recently became available. Frank Lampard has also been floated as an outsider, despite only recently taking charge of Coventry City.

With time on their side, Rangers will carefully assess their options before making a final decision on the club’s long-term managerial future.
