Leon King’s Rangers Future Could See a Revival Under Barry Ferguson
Leon King’s opportunities at Rangers have diminished in recent seasons, but Barry Ferguson’s arrival as interim manager could offer him a fresh chance.
The 21-year-old progressed through the club’s youth system but has struggled to establish himself in the senior squad. Over the past two seasons, he has only made a handful of appearances at Ibrox, making a potential exit seem likely.
However, with Ferguson taking over from Philippe Clement, the young Scottish centre-back may get the opportunity to prove himself following recent developments.
King’s Redemption Possible After Nsiala’s Struggles
Ferguson might turn to King in the short term, according to Stephen McGinn, particularly after Clinton Nsiala was substituted just 30 minutes into Rangers’ 4-2 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park on Wednesday (26 February).
James Tavernier replaced Nsiala in central defence, but McGinn questioned whether the 33-year-old is a viable long-term solution in that role. Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (27 February), McGinn pondered:
“Does King have at least a short-term future at Rangers? Tavernier filled in at centre-half, but I’m not sure that’s a long-term option. Could this be a chance for King to redeem himself?”
Defensive Dilemmas for Ferguson at Ibrox
Ferguson is assessing his defensive options, with Robin Pröpper also at risk of being dropped after struggling to adapt to Scottish football since his arrival.
The Dutch centre-back has partnered Nsiala in recent weeks due to injuries in Rangers’ backline, but Nsiala’s recent dip in form played a part in Clement’s dismissal.
John Souttar remains sidelined after another injury setback, while Dujon Sterling, who was also deployed at centre-back by Clement, has been unavailable for some time.
With limited defensive options, Ferguson may be forced to give King a chance. If he has lost faith in Nsiala, it would make sense to start the Scottish youngster against Motherwell in the league on Saturday (1 March), ahead of Rangers’ crucial Europa League clash with Fenerbahce at Ülker Stadium on 6 March.
