Nico Schlotterbeck speaks out on his future at BVB

It’s no surprise to Borussia Dortmund fans that Nico Schlotterbeck has been their standout player this season. While he is a dependable figure in defense, BVB’s number 4 has also made significant contributions across the pitch, including two assists from his corner kicks during the 3-1 victory over Mainz.

However, his future at the club may be uncertain if Borussia Dortmund does not provide him with the opportunity to compete at a high level, particularly given the club’s poor domestic form this season. With discussions about a new contract already underway, Schlotterbeck addressed this issue after the recent win at Westfalenstadion:

“I am really happy to be here, and I know what it means to play for the club. BVB remains my first point of contact.”

Nico was certified to calm fans down regarding conversations for a new contract with the Black-and-Yellows, as the young center-back claims to feel a deeper connection with the club. However, he still provided some feedback on what the team needs to aim for in the future:

“In the summer, we will sit down with the club’s management and my family and discuss the plan for the next few years – and hope that we can achieve something good. The club is capable of much more.”

In addition to that, Nico also shared some self-criticism on why the club is not in a position to compete for the top four this season. As he highlighted the importance of playing in Europe every season, Schlotterbeck claimed that Dortmund needs to go back to old habits of seeking glory:

“Playing internationally is what defines the club. Because it is become a habit over the years. But I also have to examine what I have done to ensure that we are not in a position where we are talking about the top four. I would like to play internationally, preferably with BVB.”

Nico Schlotterbeck’s contract expires in June 2027, and the club officials are willing (and should) offer him a new and more financially advantageous deal. According to Sky Sports journalist Patrick Berger, Schlotterbeck is leaning toward staying at BVB, even with the absence of European football next season. More talks about a higher salary deal should happen during this summer, as Nico is the piece Kehl and company should build this team around.
