Odsonne Edouard puts Celtic on transfer alert

Few would argue against Odsonne Edouard’s desire to test his mettle in the Premier League after four highly productive years at Celtic. However, his experiences since more than tripling his salary in England serve as a poignant reminder that sometimes, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side.

While the £20 million investments in Arne Engels and Adam Idah have yet to prove their worth, Edouard undoubtedly justified his then-club record transfer fee during his trophy-laden tenure in Glasgow. Acquired from PSG in 2018 following a stellar loan spell, the £9 million striker amassed nearly 100 goals, securing a cherished place in the hearts of fans.

Known affectionately as “French Eddy” among the Celtic supporters, he consistently troubled Rangers’ defense and made significant contributions in European competitions, ultimately convincing Crystal Palace to pay £14 million for him in 2021. Despite some fans alleging that Edouard had given up during a disappointing 10-in-a-row season—where he still managed to score a commendable 22 goals—a separation seemed timely, especially with Japanese sensation Kyogo arriving to quickly win over the Celtic faithful.

Now, four seasons on, Edouard finds himself at a pivotal point in his career. Last summer, he was presented with an opportunity to rejuvenate his career at Leicester City after losing his place at Selhurst Park, but his season-long loan has been disastrous. Since November 10, he has not made an appearance for the relegation-threatened Foxes and has only been included in one matchday squad since Ruud van Nistelrooy took charge.

Reports indicate that Leicester paid a loan fee of £2.5 million and agreed to cover a significant portion of his £90,000-per-week wages, a costly move for a club fighting to meet financial regulations. Attempts by Palace to terminate the unproductive agreement in January were blocked, leaving Edouard at risk of spending the remainder of the season on the sidelines.

Recently, Van Nistelrooy provided insight into the striker’s lack of playing time, explaining that Edouard is competing for a spot with Jamie Vardy and Patson Daka, who are currently ahead of him in the hierarchy. He stated: “He has some minor issues that kept him from training, but most of the time he’s training. He’s competing for two spots with Jamie and Patson, and I’ve been selecting the first two.”

Now 27, Edouard faces a crucial decision regarding his future this summer, with no indication that he will be offered a permanent move to King Power Stadium.
